April - Blount County Commission Monthly Report
No Work on the Budget
The month of April is remarkable only for what the Commission did NOT do. The April meetings dealt only with a number of routine matters. The Commission should have been discussing the budget for next year. Instead, the budget was not even on the Agenda. I guess the political machine did not want the truth to come out before the election.
The Budget Released After the Election
Two days after the election, the Mayor and the Budget Committee released the proposed FY14-15 budget. The reason they postponed the annoucement until after the election was immediately obvious. The proposed budget calls for spending to exceed revenue by more than $4.5 million.
The proposed budget does nothing to address the wasteful spending. The proposed shows County spending rising more than 75% faster than inflation. The proposed budget does nothing to address the wasteful spending. For example, it contains nearly $700,000 for unneeded Sheriff's vehicles. It contains more than $850,000 for the "Industrial Development" even though counties similar to us are spending less than half that amount, and getting better results. The Commission refuses to cut these and many other areas of waste.
In short, there is no reason to be spending $4.5 million more than we are taking in, if the Mayor and Commission would simply do their jobs. Unfortunately, they would rather deplete the last of the rainy day funds, than do the hard work of cutting the budget.
Clearly, the Mayor and the Commission did not get the message on May 6th, when the voters kicked six incumbents off the Commission. We will probably have to wait for the new Commission to take office for the message to sink in.
Only YOU can change YOUR government
